This is actually an intentional change.
The previous solution used a hard-coded <img> tag, which I decided that I didn't like. Spam bots have learned most of the common variations on e-mail addresses, and I figured a forward slash looked enough like a URL to confuse them if the user chooses to display their address. It's not foolproof, and anything written to take advantage of the format will obviously work, but there's no solution that results in readable e-mail addresses that bots can't handle.
The same call to convertEmail is used in both the member list and the profile, so what you'll see in one is the same in the other, unless something goes horribly wrong.
