So I got a letter in the post today, saying we were automatically being upgraded to the highest data plan because in the last month alone we used 690GB of data transfer. Their fair use policy allows for 250GB. In fairness to the rest of the housemates, I think I used at least 300GB of that data transfer... possibly more... but does that not seem a bit unfair considering that the majority of downloads I would have made was Full HD movies and TV shows? I mean just the two Seasons of Sarah Connor Chronicles I downloaded was about 60 - 70 GB. And I watched that in a weekend. Should ISP's wake up and smell the ever increasing data usage that's taking place in the wake of the proliferation of Full HD TV's and the demand for crystal clear video.

I mean before my era of HD came along, the single biggest month I had was 160GB,so the 250GB limit was grand for then, more than that was excessive. But now, youtube video's are being streamed in 1080p, more and more HD TV series become available, more and more HD films become available, digital television streaming, even most new games now are 10 - 15 GB mainly thanks to their texture packs, and thanks to digital distribution systems like steam and Netflix(although I can't use that yet thanks to mutha frakers and they're copyright licensing BS). FFS like, why does every company have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the modern era every single fraking time...

Sky do this a lot to my mum, even if my brother's not used an awful lot seemingly, they keep sending them letters telling them they're being automatically upgraded. It's a dodgy practice but it's why I stay on the "unlimited" packages, even if they have a FUP it usually means throttling rather than extra charges. But ISP's do need to invest in improving infrastructure and offering better services with higher caps.

Agreed, ISP's are struggling to cope with the new demand for streaming video and online gaming. They need to invest and get their act together otherwise things will slow to a crawl. The move to IPv6 needs to happen soon too.

I am on the Unlimited package! But they have some stupid Unlimited plus account that they put their power users on when they've been bold like me

You'll notice a massive lack of info regarding data caps. They used to say for the 10mb package it had something like 100GB, then for the 20mb package and the 30mb it was just "unlimited". Now they just don't say. They're shower bastards

Edit:Just noticed it still has what I said above! :P

"250GB for Fibre Power Broadband 20Mb and 30Mb"

How the fuck they define that as unlimited in their marketing is beyond me. That should be illegal.

Laws over this kind of thing are getting stricter here, is it not the case in (ireland?).
Would you like some toast?

You'll find in Ireland we do things crazy ways. Some area's we're well ahead, others we're back in the stone ages. Blasphemy is against the law here FFS. I'd say this will go on for another few years before before the government gets it finger out and properly modernises laws in relation to internet access. Unfortunately we have a fairly right wing government in power now, so they will probably support the companies before they support the people :/
