....and it's a fucking space whale.

No, really. It's massive.

Kind of underwhelmed, personally. The Odyssey isn't much of a departure from the Sovereign, compared to how previous Enterprises moved forward from the older design. I guess the guy was aiming for conservative and "safe" but as a trade-off he failed to put any real creativity into it.

Personally, I'd have preferred it if
the new Enterprise was a Vesta class. Hell, all of the in-game ships would probably look better if Cryptic hired Mark Rademaker to do all the designs and facelifts.

(Incidentally, CBS just gave the green light for Rademaker to have his ships implemented in STO. The Vesta is top of his list.)

Just did the shakedown cruise mission. This thing isn't exactly a looker, but it's actually pretty badass.

Despite being no more mobile than a statue of a beached whale, once you get to broadsiding you're almost guaranteed to destroy whatever it is your six phaser arrays are aimed at. Power is hardly a concern - my weapon power was recharging almost as fast as I could drain it. Torps in the front and back are nice, but then again with a turn rate this low you're going to need them.

Bridge officer selections are nice, if not too revolutionary - it benefits from the universal Lt Commander slot. Consoles are as you'd expect - 2 Tac, 4 Eng, 3 Sci - which is a better setup than normal star cruisers. Special ability is the Advanced Quantum Slipstream Drive, essentially super nitros that can run for twice as long as the usual version.

Unfortunately, even though it's a good +1 version of the star cruiser it still won't have a place in the typical 5-man team build. Like it's predecessors it can't contribute much to the team that a well-fitted escort or science vessel couldn't do equally well, or better.

I take it this thing is not canon / hasn't got a "captain" who isn't the player?

Looks like a cross between the Enterprise-E and Voyager.

This ship was designed and implemented specifically to be used as the Enterprise-F, so like it or not we're stuck with it. The big 1701 itself is slated to show up in an 'upcoming' Feature Episode series that's due 'soon', we'll find out who the captain is then I guess.

For the time being, there are plenty of "U.S.S. Enterprize-Fs" flying around. -_-'

So, answers to Trekker's previous two questions.

Odyssey-class Bridge:

The Andorian twit in the middle is Va'Kel Shon, the new captain. His last ship was a Defiant-class, U.S.S. Belfast. You bail it out in the first mission of The 2800, then he tries to pull a Big Damn Heroes on you during the fourth. As you can probably guess, that didn't end well for the aptly-named Belfast - these days, Ireland is probably the more intact of the two.

On his immediate right is Earth Spacedock's former second-in-command as well as lowbie mission-giver, Commander Samuel Winters. He disappeared after the Season 5 update, but returned to tag along in the fourth mission of The 2800 and then seize one of Starfleet's most prestigious assignments. One has to wonder who he blew to get in that chair.

The rest of them are former Belfast crew members, apparently.

(Three +1 variants of the Odyssey-class - one for tactical, one for engineering and one for science - are coming soon to a Cryptic Store near you. At 20 quid. Each.)

Canon-wise, most people are sticking with the "it's not canon until it's in a TV show" approach, and Word of God has nothing to say on the matter.

That said, even those hardliners take into account the fact that it was chosen in a CBS-run contest, finalized under CBS supervision, and included in a product to which CBS retains all IP rights. Everyone agrees on one point - should CBS decide on another TV series, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Odyssey design used for the Enterprise, and possibly even Cryptic's own render-quality assets.

And as a footnote here's my fleet escort, looking significantly less fugly - thanks in no small part to the Jem'Hadar space set making it much more grey and purple than usual.

I now have a computer worthy of playing the game. So we shall see.

Looks like a Galaxy Class.

I hate it.
